Former Real Madrid playmaker Rafael van der Vaart has compared ex-Barcelona ace Memphis Depay to veteran forward Lionel Messi.
Depay failed to score what would have only been a consolation goal as Netherlands were demolished 4-0 by France in the Euro 2024 qualifying game at the weekend.
Depay, who left Barcelona for rivals Atletico Madrid in January, also missed the chance to score on the rebound from Maignan’s after attempting an audacious finish.
But Van der Vaart, believes that even Lionel Messi can make the same mistake, insisting that the Argentina international has missed penalties on several occasions.
The former Netherlands international told NOS, “Of course he misses penalties, but it’s sad there’s no one else willing to take them. I think the same with Messi.
“He’s the best player of all time, but he also misses lots of penalties. He takes them every time, but no one says: ‘Let me take it.’
“He’s a bit like our Messi. It’s true, he had a bad game against France, but he is still our best player.”
